NI Milk Cup Final

Belvedere 1-3 Hearts

(Coleraine Showgrounds).

Happy Hearts collected their second Milk Cup crown, beating Irish side Belvedere in the Premier final at Coleraine Showgrounds.

It has been ten years since the Scottish club last secured the title but they were in irresistible form, bouncing back from a goal down to land the big prize.

It was a massive blow for the Dublin side and coach John Moore who fervently believed his team was good enough to go all the way.

The southern side certainly looked capable in the opening stages, starting with real promise and Derek Swan attempted an audacious lob over the head of keeper Milan Barjaktarovie after eight minutes.

Swan had the Hearts defence in a flap three minutes later with the opening goal. Conor Lenihan provided the cross from the left and Swan took to flight, sending a header across the goal to the far post where keeper Barjaktarovie scooped the ball away but it had already crossed the line.

Swan was flying high in those early moments, cutting into the edge of the box and drilling in a shot which the keeper tipped away for a corner.

Hearts finally mounted a response and Callum Elliot burst through after 23 minutes. He appeared to be hauled down in the box by Barjaktarovie but no penalty was awarded. The ball broke to Andrew Driver who curled a right foot shot just past the post.

But the “Jam Tarts” started their roll just before half-time. Driver steered over an inswinging corner which came back off the bar. Elliot nipped in behind the defence at the back post to equalise with a looping header.

That injected new life into Hearts and within four minutes of the second half Dennis McLaughlin ran from halfway to the edge of the box before cracking a fine shot past keeper Shane Roche.

Neill Hooks then proceeded to set up an opportunity for Sean Mackle who steered the ball wide of the advancing keeper and the wrong side of an upright.

However, with 52 minutes gone Elliot grabbed his second. Driver supplied the cross and the striker knew exactly where he was placing his finish.

Belvedere almost pulled one back but Oliver Antonio cleared his line and when Swan managed to work his way into the box he fired his shot straight at the keeper.

Defender Jason Thompson, who had an outstanding tournament for the Scots, denied Scot Weir with a clearance in front of goal and Swan failed in his attempt to collect the rebound.

Elliot, who also shared the player of the tournament accolade, picked up the man of the match award.

Before the game a crowd of 4,000 impeccably observed a minute’s silence in memory of soccer legend and Milk Cup committee member Bertie Peacock who died on Thursday.

Manchester United, beaten by Hearts in the quarter-finals, salvaged their week by winning the BT Trophy with a convincing 5-0 victory over South Africa’s Tuks Academy. Sheffield United landed the Dunluce Trophy with a 6-0 success against Shamrock Rovers

FINAL REPORT
Turkey 1, Brazil 0

Turkey trotted off with the silverware in the Milk Cup yesterday sending Brazil to a second successive defeat in the Elite Championship decider at Coleraine Showgrounds.

It was the Turks’ third triumph in the tenth year of the senior event and it was all down to an early goal from Emin Donmez who found himself drenched in a real milk shake at the end as his team mates celebrated their success.

They milked the occasion even further by repaying a small but vocal group of fans for their support by drowning them in a milky deluge!

It was a carnival conclusion to a superb competition which also provided Northern Ireland with a memorable victory over Brazil and shot goalscoring sensation Dean Shiels into the spotlight.

The Brazilians were gracious in defeat. Administrator Bruno Costa congratulated the Turks and promised to return next year: “We have had a wonderful time. We will be coming back to Northern Ireland next year,” he said.

The Turks, who went through the competition unbeaten and conceding just one goal, were worthy of this latest success. They set their stall out early on and were in front after four minutes with a spectacular strike from Donmez who cracked a glorious ground shot past stranded keeper Renan Soares from 23 yards.
It was just the start the showpiece required to produce a full-blooded contest.

Turkey were on top early on but the Brazilians came back to create several chances. They should have been level after 25 minutes when Ricardo da Silva slipped free and released Ernane Campos who galloped into the box but was disposed by keeper Ufuk Ceylan.

Domingos Filho unloaded a 40-yard free kick just of target as the Samba Boys stepped up the pressure and just before the break Renato Ribeiro watched in frustration as his long range effort flashed just over the crossbar.

Despite the class of Campos in midfield, Brazil just could not find a way past Ceylan whose reading of the game was impressive.
Edilson Guimaraes tried to catch the keeper with a cross cum shot from the right but the ball ended up on top of the net.

Turkey carved out a chance from a cross by the talented Rasit Sevindir. Emre Aktas went sliding in to hit a low shot on target from six yards. He was frustrated to see Soares make a vital stop at the base of a post.
Anticipation was high when Brazil were awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal but Guimaraes fired the ball into a wall of defenders.

The Brazilians stepped up the tempo in the closing stages. However, they were almost caught on the counter attack by the quick breaking Turks. Sevindir set up a chance for Deniz Can, keeper Soares parried the ball allowing defender Levi Santos to sweep it clear in front of goal.

In a dramatic finale Santos was denied the equaliser by another goal line clearance. This time his header beat Ceylan but Mustafa Cevahir was well positioned to head the ball off the line.

There was to be no happy ending for Brazil and they were fortunate not to concede a second deep in stoppage time. Milih Gunduz broke down the right and slipped the ball inside for Emre Aktas to clip a shot wide of Soares but just past the far post.

The final whistle was the signal for the Turkish celebrations to begin and Sevindir was named man of the match to crown his industrious performance.

In the Elite Championship place matches Northern Ireland defeated the USA 2-1 at Portstewart to finish fifth. Both goals came from new scoring sensation Dean Shiels. Chad Barrett replied for the USA.

Shiels’ Hibernian team mate Sam Morrow was red carded in the second half for a second bookable offence.
Israel defeated Wales 5-0 in the 7th/8th decider and Denmark beat Russia 3-1 to finish third.

NI MILK CUP FINAL

CSKA Moscow 0, Lyngby Boldklub 0

(Lyngby won 4-3 on pens)

The Milk Cup turned out to be wonderful for Copenhagen club Lyngby Boldklub! The Danes danced with delight when young Morten Lund drilled home the final penalty to put send CSKA Moscow home empty-handed at the end of a lively scoreless draw.

But the Russians can feel they were the victims of rough justice. Rusian Perepelyukov looked to have put them in front in the second half when he connected with a free kick to head the ball past keeper Nicklas Hojlund. However, referee Gerry Flynn disallowed it for an offside infringement.

The Russians looked more interested in scoring early on and Emil Spork tested impressive keeper Nicklas Hojlund after nine minutes when he connected with the ball from 20 yards. Hojlund, however, was equal to the challenge.

CSKA’s Alexander Kudryatsev has had an exceptional tournament and he looked certain to score after a mazy run which took him past two defenders before he pulled his shot across goal and wide of Hojlund.

The Danes worked hard in defence to resist the Russian advances but Kudryatsev was always a threat and when he set up Victor Vorobev it seemed inevitable that the Russians would score but the striker pulled his shot wide of the target.

In the second half CSKA got back into the groove after a brief flurry of forward activity from the Danes. Lekso Daneliya shot wide inside the box following good work by Sergei Shumilan.

Then Shumilan was denied by the crossbar after his lob had beaten Hojlund and before the end Vorobev cracked a 30 yard free kick wide.

In the penalty decider the Russians could not hold their nerve and Perepelyukov and Kudryatsev failed to register. Anders Christiansen missed his spot kick but Lund made sure to spark scenes of delight for the young Danes.

* Christian Gytkyer (Lyngby) won the Man of the Match award.

* In a special challenge match the Republic beat Northern Ireland 4-0 in a game involving players with learning disabilities. The match was a prelude to the Junior Milk Cup final and was played in front of 1,000 spectators, a terrific audience for the players.
