PREMIER MILK CUP FINAL
FC Barcelona 1 v 0 Chelsea
Barcelona triumphed on their first visit to the Milk Cup but they had keeper Imanol Rubio to thank for keeping Chelsea at bay right at the end of a low key final at Coleraine Showgrounds.
Amazingly the London club’s kids were hardly at the races up front until the closing stages when they mounted a mini assault on Barca’s one-goal lead. That was when Rubio made a remarkable double save to deny Shaun Cummings and Nana Ofori in quick succession as the game drifted into injury time.
Chelsea seemed content to let the Spanish side attack them and seldom produced any menace. San Pedro should have handed them the lead after only eight minutes, wriggling into space before lining up a lofted shot which finished over the bar.
Chelsea survived another scare when Daniel Gutierrez stretched keeper Rhys Taylor with a header as the Spaniards warmed to the challenge in the Showgrounds sunshine.
They finally took the lead in the 25th minute with that stunning strike from Bermudez who gathered the ball on the right flank, looked up and when he saw Taylor off his line, he had the presence of mind to brilliantly lift the ball over the head of the keeper and into the net.
Chelsea had only one corner to show for their first half endeavours and they still couldn’t make an impression up front with Rubio a virtual spectator.
Bermudez and Gutierrez teamed up to create another chance six minutes from time. The finish didn’t match the build up though as Gutierrez poked a ground shot at Taylor.
Right at the end the Londoners might have taken the final to penalties. Ryan Bertrand took possession on the edge of the box and cracked a vicious right foot shot towards the target. However, keeper Rubio was alert and turned the ball away.
That amazing double save by Rubio helped ensure the Spanish lifted the title to complete a double success over English clubs following Thursday night’s semi-final victory over Manchester United.
Benfica won the Dunluce Trophy when they beat County Londonderry 6-5 on penalties following a scoreless draw and Brazilians Botafogo lifted the BT Northern Ireland Trophy with a 3-0 success over Feyenoord
